KUALA LUMPUR: Recurve archers Ku Nurin Afiqah Ku Ruzaini, Ariana Nur Diana Zairi, and Joey Tan broke the Asian Under-21 record in the women’s team qualifying round at the Asian Championships in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Sunday.
The Malaysian trio recorded a combined score of 1,943, surpassing the old record of 1,912. Korea topped the qualifying with 2,020 points, followed by India (1,964) and Taiwan (1,954).
National coach Arif Farhan Ibrahim Putra said he did not expect the archers to break the record.
“Our focus here is to prepare for the Thailand SEA Games (Dec 9-20),” he said when contacted.
“So, breaking the Asian Under-21 record is quite unexpected, but it is a good boost for our SEA Games preparations.”
The trio’s total places them fourth in the women’s team event, which earned them a bye in the first round.
They will next face Vietnam, who qualified in fifth place, in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.
