Malaysia takes quantum leap in cybersecurity readiness

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has unveiled its national post-quantum cryptography readiness roadmap, a strategic framework to build a quantum-secure Asean.

Launched by Digital Ministry and National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) during the Post-Quantum Cryptography Conference 2025, the roadmap outlines Malaysia’s vision to strengthen national and regional resilience against emerging quantum-era threats.

The initiative positions Malaysia at the forefront of Southeast Asia’s efforts to prepare for the quantum transition, aligning domestic cybersecurity readiness with international standards and best practices.

The conference, organised by Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) Consortium, was held here from Oct 28-30, bringing together more than 2,500 delegates from over 30 countries.

The PKI Consortium also introduced the post-quantum cryptography maturity model, a global framework designed to help governments, enterprises and critical infrastructure operators assess their preparedness and plan their transition to quantum-safe encryption.

Workshops and technical sessions during the conference provided participants with practical strategies for cryptographic agility, migration planning and securing high-risk sectors such as healthcare and the Internet of Things.

“This is the moment for organisations around the world to begin, or at least prepare to replace, vulnerable cryptography before quantum computers make today’s data unsafe,” said Paul van Brouwershaven, chair of the PKI Consortium and its post-wuantum cryptography working group.

PKI Consortium board and executive council chair Chris Bailey said collective action was critical to protect the global digital economy.

Following Kuala Lumpur’s success, the next Post-Quantum Cryptography Conference will be held in Germany in 2026, with a stronger focus on sharing real-world migration experiences, challenges and lessons learned from organisations navigating the shift to quantum-safe systems.
