A planned visit to Myanmar led by foreign minister Mohamad Hasan has been postponed, Wisma Putra said today.
The ministry said in a statement that the trip scheduled for today was deferred because of “unavoidable circumstances”, but did not elaborate. It said details on a new date will be announced later.
Mohamad, as foreign minister of Asean’s current chair Malaysia, was to lead a delegation of counterparts from Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia to assess the situation in Myanmar after the dissolution of the junta government and the lifting of the state of emergency.
He previously said he wanted a clearer picture of how Myanmar plans to hold a general election when 63 towns remain under emergency rule.
Myanmar lifted the state of emergency on July 31, more than four years after seizing power in a coup, as a step towards holding elections later in 2025, but its plan to hold elections has faced widespread international condemnation and ongoing internal unrest.
