KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has called off the state-level Malaysia Day celebrations at Padang Merdeka on Tuesday (Sept 16) in view of the widespread crisis brought about by continuous rain affecting at least seven districts.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor informed Head of State Tun Musa Aman about the decision on Monday (Sept 15).
“The state government’s immediate priority is to manage the crisis, coordinate recovery efforts and ensure timely rescue operations for affected communities.
“In this time of difficulty, the well-being, welfare and security of the people are of utmost importance. We must direct all focus and resources to those affected,” he said.
Hajiji also said he has instructed the state disaster management committee to remain on full alert and be prepared for prompt action as conditions on the ground continue to develop amid prevailing bad weather.
The committee, chaired by State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong, meets frequently to monitor developments and coordinate responses in the affected districts.
Hajiji urged the public to remain vigilant, adhere to safety advisories, and cooperate fully with rescue teams as efforts are being intensified across the state.
Earlier, state-level Malaysia Day celebration organising chairman Datuk Christina Liew said the decision to cancel the celebration was made after considering the unpredictable weather conditions and the situation of flood victims.
“Please take care of your own safety and take precautions in facing unpredictable events,” she advised, adding that any inconvenience caused by the cancellation was regretted.
