PETALING JAYA:

Noor Azrina Azmi, the wife of Maju Holdings Sdn Bhd executive chairman Abu Sahid Mohamed, has been charged with money laundering involving over RM60 million.

Noor Azrina, 48, claimed trial when the charge was read to her before Kuala Lumpur sessions court judge Rosli Ahmad.

According to Utusan Malaysia, she was accused of receiving proceeds from illegal activities amounting to RM67,136,588.43 in her bank account from an account belonging to her husband.

The offence was allegedly committed between March 6, 2017 and Nov 27, 2017, at the Bukit Tunku branch of CIMB Bank Bhd in Kuala Lumpur.

The charge was brought under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 for receiving proceeds of an unlawful activity.

Deputy public prosecutor Akram Gharib proposed bail of RM500,000 with one surety, and the surrender of Noor Azrina’s passport to the court.

Defence counsel Abdul Hakeem Aiman did not object, saying the amount was reasonable.

“The defence agrees to the proposed amount as it is fair and sufficient to ensure the accused’s attendance in court for future proceedings. The accused has also extended full cooperation throughout the investigation,” he was quoted as saying.

The court then granted bail of RM500,000 with one surety, along with the additional condition requested by the prosecution, and set Nov 3 for case mention.

Earlier, Abu Sahid pleaded not guilty to four counts of criminal breach of trust involving RM313 million, and 13 counts of money laundering amounting to RM139 million.

All 17 charges are linked to the Maju Expressway Extension project.
