KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) group managing director Datuk Captain Izham Ismail will hang up his wings for retirement on Jan 31 next year after over four decades of soaring through the skies and steering the national carrier through some of its defining moments.
MAG said Izham will be succeeded by the current Malaysia Airlines Bhd chief operating officer Captain Nasaruddin Bakar as president and group chief executive officer.
The designation is a newly-created role that replaces the group managing director position.
In a statement, MAG board member and Khazanah Nasional Bhd managing director Datuk Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir paid tribute to Izham’s unwavering leadership and over four-decade of service.
“He has exemplified relentless commitment, integrity and passion in guiding MAG through pivotal periods of transformation and growth.”
Amirul Feisal added that Izham’s leadership had strengthened the group, defined its strategic direction and fostered a high-performance culture that positions MAG for continued success.
Izham, who took helm on Dec 1, 2017, is MAG’s longest serving chief executive.
He has guided the group, particularly Malaysia Airlines Bhd, through turbulent skies from its financial restructuring to surviving the pandemic that brought global aviation to its knees.
Under his leadership, MAG returned to profitability and rebuilt its foundations for a more sustainable future.
Meanwhile, Nasaruddin has over three decades of experience across flight operations, management and strategic roles within MAG.
He has led several key transformation initiatives, including the successful turnaround of MASwings in 2022 and the implementation of profit-driven structures under the Long-Term Business Plan 2.0 (LTBP2.0)
MAG said Nasaruddin will lead the group into its next chapter under LTBP3.0, focusing on operational excellence, customer experience and sustainable growth across both its airlines and non-airlines portfolios.
“Nasaruddin’s appointment marks an important milestone in MAG’s ongoing evolution, ensuring continuity in leadership and execution across the group’s portfolio of businesses,” MAG added.
