SHAH ALAM: A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) today launched the Maersk Mega Distribution Centre (DC), its largest contract logistics facility in Asia Pacific, boosting its warehouse footprint by more than 30 per cent in Malaysia.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the operation of the approximately 180,000-square-metre facility is also expected to attract investor interest in sectors such as aerospace, electronics and retail, which the government is currently spearheading.
He said the state-of-the-art facility marks a significant milestone for both Maersk and the local logistics and supply chain ecosystem, reflecting the company’s commitment to developing efficient, technology-driven and sustainable operations, while positioning Malaysia as a logistics powerhouse within Asean.
“This logistics sector is very important in driving the country’s economic growth, and the Transport Ministry certainly welcomes private investment in this industry or sector,” he said when met after the launching ceremony here.
Loke said his ministry is also working to attract investors to explore the potential available in other states so that the economic spillover from related companies will not be concentrated solely in the Klang Valley.
“Our current strategy is to ensure balance throughout the country; for example, in the north, we have Penang and Kedah, in the south, we have Johor playing an important role, while on the East Coast, we are using the ECRL to stimulate industrialisation there.
“Even in Sabah and Sarawak, there is potential being explored.
“So, the government’s main strategy and focus are not limited to the Klang Valley, and that is why we are developing various modes of transportation, including rail, across the country, which we hope will further enhance the nation’s industrial sector,” he said.
Maersk Mega DC, a multi-client facility, offers 100,000 pallet positions and is purpose-built to handle a wide range of commodities, including fast-moving consumer goods, food and beverage items, footwear and apparel.
Strategically located in Shah Alam, with direct connectivity to major highways such as the North-South Expressway, ELITE Highway and Shah Alam Expressway, the facility enables seamless access to key industrial zones, urban centres, Port Klang and Kuala Lumpur International Airport, ensuring optimal transit times for customers.
The facility is located around 340km from the Port of Tanjung Pelepas, which is Maersk’s key transhipment hub port in Asia.
