The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is investigating a tip-off that dangerous goods are being smuggled into the country through cargo arriving at KLIA.
A MACC source said the anti-graft agency received information that there were elements of corruption in the alleged smuggling of the goods.
The source said the allegation was concerning as it posed security risks to the international airport, Utusan Malaysia reported.
“Based on our preliminary investigation, the dangerous goods include chemical substances which were declared as household products.”
The source said MACC was investigating the company and other parties involved with the cargo shipments. It is also identifying possible weaknesses in governance that had allowed the goods to be smuggled into the country.
MACC is working with the airport management and other enforcement agencies in its probe.
The agency’s senior director of intelligence, Idris Zaharuddin, confirmed the investigation is ongoing.
