KUALA LUMPUR: Coach Chang Kim Wai is delighted to work with the Magician.
The 49-year-old was appointed by BAM today as the new national assistant men’s doubles coach.
This means he will be assisting the vaunted Herry IP and also his former mentor, Rexy Mainaky.
Kim Wai previously served BAM as men’s and women’s doubles coach from 2004–2017.
Now, he will help Herry coach 11 doubles pairs at Academy Badminton Malaysia.
“It is a great opportunity to work under a legendary coach like Herry. There is so much to learn from him,” said Kim Wai.
Kim Wai said he was contacted by BAM doubles coaching director Rexy after returning from China where he worked as the doubles head coach for Guangxi province from 2022 to 2024.
Kim Wai, who had worked with Guangxi head coach Huang Nan Yan and 2000 Olympics women’s doubles silver medallist Yang Wei, had also trained current China national mixed doubles player Li Hong Yi.
“I previously worked under Rexy at BAM and he called me after learning that I had returned from coaching in China. I thank him and BAM for considering me for the job,” said Kim Wai.
“So, it’s good to be back working and joining forces with Rexy,” added Kim Wai who also headed the Lee Chong Wei Academy in Ipoh from 2017–2021.
Rexy believes Kim Wai’s presence will strengthen the national men’s doubles department.
“We are pleased to welcome Kim Wai to our coaching team. His proven track record and deep understanding of the doubles play make him a solid addition to the setup under coach Herry,” added Rexy.
