The owner of a logistics company has been arrested by police on suspicion of providing his lorry drivers with hacked Touch ‘n Go cards with tampered balances since over a year ago.
Negeri Sembilan police chief Alzafny Ahmad said the Malaysian and his wife, a Chinese national, were arrested on Sept 9 after a complaint was lodged by Touch ‘n Go, Harian Metro reported.
Alzafny said Touch ‘n Go had raised red flags in July after identifying discrepancies between the toll fees collected and the amount being claimed by toll plazas.
The financial services company found that 213 compromised cards had been used by the logistics firm, causing nearly RM60,000 in losses to Touch ‘n Go in July and August alone.
After identifying several lorries that made the suspicious transactions, police raided the Seremban-based company which has a fleet of 160 lorries.
They seized 304 Touch ‘n Go cards, a CCTV unit, RM400,000 in cash and three handphones.
A preliminary investigation found that a man had hacked original Touch ‘n Go cards with a special software that can be purchased online to manipulate their value as having RM300 each.
He then sold the cards to the company for between RM150 and RM200 each. The suspect, a Malaysian, is still at large.
“The suspect may have sold these cards to other parties,” said Alzafny.
He said the company owner’s wife was tasked with checking the hacked cards before distributing them to the lorry drivers.
The couple has been remanded until tomorrow to assist in the investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
