LKIM Hands Over New Houses To Two Bachok Fishermen Under PKPN Initiative

BACHOK, Sept 13 (Bernama) — The Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) continues to improve the wellbeing of the fishing community with the handover of two new homes under the Special Housing Project for Fishermen (PKPN) in Kampung Perupok, here.

LKIM director-general Hamdan Mamat said the recipients, Mohamed Awang, 65, and Mohd Zahari Mat, 37, are members of the Bachok Area Fishermen’s Association.

“The PKPN project is among the key initiatives of the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry through LKIM to safeguard the wellbeing of fishermen.

“With safer and more comfortable homes, these families can enjoy a better quality of life while strengthening the fishing community nationwide,” he told reporters after the house key handover ceremony, which was also attended by LKIM director Sobri Ibrahim.

Hamdan said that since it was introduced in 2012, the PKPN had benefited low-income fishermen through housing repairs, the construction of new homes and resettlement with basic facilities.

For this year, assistance of up to RM20,000 is allocated for house renovations, while the cost of building new houses is set at RM84,000 per unit in the peninsula and RM90,000 per unit in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.

According to Hamdan, from 2012 until last August, a total of 20,603 fishermen’s houses nationwide were renovated at a cost of RM220.4 million, while 306 new houses were built for RM20.9 million, bringing the total expenditure to nearly RM241 million.

“In alone, approvals have been given for the repair of 1,004 fishermen’s houses involving RM9.6 million and for the construction of 16 new houses. Of the total, 12 have been completed, with the remaining four to be built under Phase 2 this year at a cost of RM1.2 million,” he said.

Hamdan said LKIM has applied for an allocation of RM70 million under the 13th Malaysia Plan, including RM10 million for the First Rolling Plan, to carry out 2,321 house repair projects and build 274 new houses for fishermen under the PKPN over the next five years.

On the eligibility to own a house under the PKPN, he said applicants must be fishermen who go out to sea, own land or have approval to build on it, and be members of the area fishermen’s association.
