Let law take its cause in Zara Qairina's case, says Sabah assistant minister

KOTA KINABALU: The public should allow the law to take its course in the case of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir.

Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) information chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said everyone, including Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, was concerned about the death of the 13-year-old student.

“The government is also very concerned about bullying cases. (The chief minister) also said he views this as a very serious matter.

“All these issues are being looked into. The investigation has been carried out and will probably not end there.

“We have the inquest, and after the inquest, then we’ll see what happens next. So, let’s allow the law to take its course on this matter,” he said after a press conference for the 6th Kiulu Adventure Challenge at the Sabah Tourism Board office here.

Joniston, who is also the state assistant minister of tourism, culture and environment, was responding to a question on recent rallies for Zara that had turned political, with some allegedly containing seditious elements.

A woman who allegedly made seditious remarks, particularly against Sabah Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman during a recent gathering for Zara had been arrested.

Zara was found unconscious at her school on July 6 before being pronounced dead the following day at Queen Elizabeth Hospital here.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers allowed her body to be exhumed for a post-mortem last month. Beginning tomorrow, a 17-day inquest to determine the cause of her death will be held throughout the month.
