GEORGE TOWN, Sept 21 — The sinkhole that appeared on Jalan Burma Road, near the Transfer Road intersection, has been traced to a leak in a 300mm sewage pipe owned by Indah Water Konsortium (IWK).
In a statement, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) said the incident, which occurred around 9 am, led to significant damage to the road surface.
The leak, which involves a high-pressure pump system (force main), triggered the formation of the sinkhole on Jalan Burma.
In response, MBPP, in collaboration with the police (PDRM), immediately closed off Jalan Burma and diverted traffic to Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong to ensure public safety.
Authorities are awaiting further investigations by IWK and MBPP.
MBPP added that the investigation would be completed by this evening, and appropriate action will be taken by both IWK and the council.
Meanwhile, the public is advised to plan their routes in advance to avoid the Komtar area, as traffic congestion may occur due to the ongoing road diversion on Burma Road. — Bernama
