ALOR SETAR:

Gerakan president Dominic Lau has hit back at a ulama delegate who questioned his ability to serve as Penang Perikatan Nasional chairman.

Lau said that Gerakan was actively serving as a check and balance to the DAP-led state government, despite not holding a seat in the state assembly.

“Gerakan has regularly issued statements on issues affecting the people and forced a response from state leaders, including Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the muktamar here.

The PN deputy chairman also claimed that Gerakan had helped win seven seats in the 2023 Penang state election.

PN currently holds 11 seats in the 40-seat Penang state assembly – seven by PAS and four by Bersatu.

The seven seats held by PAS are the Malay-majority constituencies of Penaga, Pinang Tunggal, Permatang Berangan, Sungai Dua, Permatang Pasir, Sungai Bakap and Pulau Betong.

Last week, Penang PAS ulama delegate Shafirul Rozani said PN’s state chapter needed a new leader, describing Lau as being like a person who owns a Ferrari but does not know how to drive it.

Lau urged PN parties to work as a team and not sabotage one another.

“We are all in the same boat. We should focus on winning the next general election, not quarrelling over positions,” he said.
