KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 — Have unpaid traffic summons? It might be time to pay up now that there’s a special limited-time discount window coming up.

Minister of Home Affairs Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail in a joint press conference with Transport Minister Anthony Loke at Parliament today, stated that the government is aiming to significantly reduce the country’s outstanding traffic summons backlog—now estimated at RM6.6 billion—by offering motorists up to 70 per cent discounts on summonses from November 1 to December 30 2025.

The limited-time offer, announced today, is part of a transitional effort ahead of a new standardised summons payment system that will take effect from January 1 2026.

Under the new approach, early payment will be rewarded with higher discounts, while late payments will be charged in full, with the possibility of further legal action.

“Many vehicle owners are holding off on paying until new discount offers are announced.

“This has contributed to the growing backlog,” said Home Minister Saifuddin.

“If this year-end offer is well received, it could significantly reduce the burden.”

From 2022 to 2025, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) collected RM640 million through various discount schemes.

However, the Cabinet now views the ongoing discount model as unsustainable, prompting a shift toward a unified, time-sensitive payment system to encourage early compliance and strengthen enforcement.

In preparation for the 2026 rollout, both PDRM and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) will reassess enforcement strategies for defaulters and continue nationwide awareness campaigns to promote road safety and legal compliance.
