Landslide hits Balik Pulau: Jalan Tun Sardon closed to all traffic

GEORGE TOWN: A landslide struck around 5pm today along Jalan Tun Sardon (Bukit Baru) in Balik Pulau, prompting authorities to close the road completely to all traffic.

A video circulating on social media appears to show a car passing through the area just before the landslide occurred.

State Transportation and Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari urged motorists to adjust their travel plans and avoid the affected stretch.

“Vehicles currently stranded along the route are instructed to turn back and use alternative roads,” he said in a statement on his Facebook page.

He also shared several photographs of the landslide.

Emergency response teams are on-site to assess the situation and ensure public safety. No injuries or casualties have been reported.

Penang has experienced bouts of heavy rain in recent days, with numerous incidents of fallen trees reported yesterday.
