KUALA LUMPUR: The recent tremors in Johor and other states show that Malaysia must strengthen its preparedness in the event of earthquakes, says Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
He said the country is not considered earthquake-prone, but such events are unpredictable.

“Earthquakes here are generally minor, but they… can cause damage and panic if we are unprepared.
“We must acknowledge this reality and take proactive steps (against) the unexpected,” he said when contacted on Sunday (Sept 7).
Lee proposed four key measures to boost national preparedness, including developing a nationwide earthquake early warning system that can disseminate alerts via mobile phones and sirens.
“The authorities should also conduct re-mapping and monitoring of fault lines with advanced seismic technology.
“Earthquake-resistant building codes and retrofitting critical infrastructure such as schools and hospitals are also needed,” he said.

Lee pointed out that there was a need for earthquake preparedness drills and safety education programmes to strengthen community resilience.
“We cannot prevent earthquakes, but we can reduce their risks and impact.
“With vigilance, early warnings, and stronger infrastructure, we can keep our people informed, safe, and ready in the face of natural hazards,” he added.
