KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Severe weather conditions brought the city’s rail network to a standstill yesterday afternoon when fallen trees caused widespread power outages across two major train routes.
Heavy rain and strong winds that began at 3.30pm triggered multiple tree falls along railway lines, highlighting the vulnerability of Malaysia’s rail infrastructure to extreme weather events.
Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) said the power supply disruption at 4.24pm affected critical routes between Salak Selatan-Port Klang and Simpang Batu, cutting off thousands of commuters during peak evening hours.
The rail operator’s emergency response teams mobilised quickly to address the infrastructure damage, completing clearance and repair work on both affected routes within four hours of the initial incident.
However, the cascading effects of the disruption continued to impact passenger services well into the evening, with ten KTM Komuter trains experiencing delays ranging from 32 to 70 minutes.
Passengers were advised to check KTMB’s official social media channels or contact the customer service hotline at 03-9779 1200 for real-time updates on service disruptions.
The storm yesterday also caused severe disruptions to traffic in the city centre, with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) reporting several incidents of fallen and uprooted trees.
