KPDN investigates a RM3 speedboat fare increase between Menumbok and Labuan, citing potential cartel conduct and misuse of fuel subsidies.

LABUAN: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry is investigating a RM3 increase in one-way speedboat fares between Menumbok and Labuan.

Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the probe follows complaints about a notice issued by the Menumbok Speedboat Operators Association regarding the November 1 fare hike.

KPDN has directed immediate action through the Malaysia Competition Commission and the Controlled Goods and Subsidy Sector.

“Under Section 4 of the Competition Act 2010, any agreement among companies to fix prices constitutes serious cartel conduct,” Armizan stated.

Guilty companies could face fines of up to 10% of their revenue, with MyCC having previously imposed RM687.9 million in penalties on 270 firms.

“KPDN will not tolerate economic sabotage through cartels that harm consumers and speedboat operators,” he emphasised.

The ministry is committed to ensuring a competitive, fair and transparent market.

SBKS is consulting the Labuan Marine Department to verify operator licensing and registration.

“Registered public transport operators are eligible for RON95 fuel subsidies under the Subsidised Petrol Control System,” Armizan added.

He stated it is therefore unjustified to raise fares citing fuel costs.

The fare hike directly affects the cost of living, particularly for daily commuters. – Bernama
