KUALA LUMPUR: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) is investigating claims that a hypermarket inflated the price of basmathi rice, charging RM55 for a 5kg pack instead of the usual RM35.

Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said the matter would be investigated further with the retailer concerned.

“Yes, we are investigating these claims (on the alleged markup in rice prices which went viral on social media),” she told the New Straits Times when contacted today.

Earlier, social media users highlighted a Facebook post alleging that a hypermarket was selling a 5kg pack of rice at RM55, compared with RM35 at another retail chain.

The post, which quickly went viral, alleged the hypermarket of taking advantage of shoppers at the start of the month when many households redeem their Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) aid.

“This is daylight robbery. It seems that whenever the start of the month comes around and people can redeem their MyKasih aid, prices are suddenly hiked to unreasonable levels. Sellers just want to make extra profit by taking advantage of buyers,” the user wrote.

A check on the post’s comment section showed many users expressing anger over the alleged price hike.

“Wow, the price suddenly shot up,” said user Shazzuwana Yana.

“I usually eat this rice… the highest I’ve ever paid was RM35,” commented Siti Aida.
