KLIA’s new AI-powered traffic system handles 45,000 cars daily, reducing congestion with a 10-minute grace period for smoother passenger drop-offs.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airports is trialling the Vehicle Access Management System (VAMS) at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2 as part of its commitment to smarter, safer, and more efficient airport operations.

The fully automated system uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology, smart cameras, and sensors to monitor vehicle flow at arrivals and departures, reducing congestion, discouraging illegal or prolonged parking, and keeping kerbsides running smoothly.

With VAMS in place, passengers can enjoy a safer, more convenient, and stress-free airport experience.

“VAMS helps reduce traffic jams and keeps the area safer and more organised for travellers, improving both efficiency and safety,” Malaysia Airports told Bernama.

Daily traffic at KLIA’s terminals can reach 45,000 vehicles, with up to 5,000 cars during peak hours, highlighting the need for effective kerbside management.

Compared to other airports overseas, KLIA’s system is relatively lenient, with a proposed 10-minute grace period for drop-offs and pick-ups.

While some international airports impose very short maximum stay limits, KLIA’s more generous window makes it easier for passengers to be dropped off or picked up without stress or immediate penalties.

VAMS is designed for ease of use, with multiple exit lanes and traffic marshals available to assist with enforcement and emergencies.

The system encourages fair and transparent kerbside management while also accommodating unexpected delays such as traffic or vehicle breakdowns, ensuring a smooth, safe, and organised experience for all airport users. – Bernama
