KKIA scare: 2 children safe after conveyor belt mishap

KOTA KINABALU: Two children were reported safe after an incident involving a baggage conveyor machine at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) here last night.

In the 9.30pm incident, a two-year-old boy was reportedly trapped in the conveyor system, while his three-year-old sister was exposed to radiation from the equipment.

Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohd Hannis Mokthar said they received an emergency call about the incident at 9.52pm.

He said a team of firefighters and officers, along with a fire engine, was immediately dispatched to the scene to assist.

“Upon arrival, the team found that the two children had entered the baggage conveyor area at the KKIA screening zone.

“The firefighters used specialised equipment to free the trapped child.

“Both children were later handed over to ambulance personnel and taken to Likas Hospital for further examination and treatment,” he said when contacted today.

According to him, both victims were reported safe, and the operation concluded at 10.20pm after confirming there were no further hazards at the scene.

Mohd Hannis also urged the public, especially parents, to keep a close watch on their children in public areas to prevent similar incidents.
