LANGKAWI: For the past five years, a woman in Kuah has turned her compassion for animals into a daily mission, feeding around 40 stray cats at the public market using her own money.
Sarina Mat Salleh, 53, from Kampung Teluk, Mukim Ulu Melaka, spends roughly RM500 each month on dry and wet cat food, arriving every evening after work to care for the hungry felines.
“I feel happy helping these cats. Every month, I spend around RM500 to buy between 50kg and 60kg of dry and wet food,” Sarina said.
She said that she started feeding the animals after noticing many strays near the market.
“Sometimes I pick up sick or injured cats and bring them home to care for them until they recover,” she added.
Sarina said the number of strays grew during the Covid-19 pandemic as many shop owners left or closed their stalls.
“From then, I made it a routine to feed them every day after work,” she said.
She usually arrives around 6pm, bringing the food in her motorcycle basket, and is often greeted by dozens of cats waiting to be fed.
“I do this sincerely because I believe it’s a form of kindness. I hope others will also show compassion to these animals,” Sarina said.
