Kinabatangan, Lamag by-elections: 93 per cent early voter turnout

KINABATANGAN: Early voting for the Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state by-elections saw a 93 per cent turnout today.

Election Commission (EC) secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said 176 out of 189 eligible police personnel cast their ballots during the process.

“The EC congratulates the returning officer and the election team for their excellent execution of duties.

“Appreciation is also extended to the Sabah State Secretary’s Office, the Sabah Federal Secretary’s Office, the police and the media for their support,” he said in a statement.

The early voting process was held from 8am to 5pm at the Kinabatangan district police headquarters.

The Kinabatangan parliamentary by-election features a three-cornered contest between Barisan Nasional’s () Mohd Kurniawan Naim Moktar, Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman (Warisan), and independent candidate Goldam Hamid.

The Lamag state seat involves a straight fight between Mohd Ismail Ayob () and Mazliwati Abdul Malek (Warisan).

The twin by-elections were called following the death of the incumbent for both seats, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, 66, on Dec 5 last year.

The EC has set Saturday (Jan 24) as the polling day for both seats.
