PETALING JAYA:

Former menteri besar Khir Toyo has officially joined Bersatu, according to a party leader.

Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik, a former Melaka chief minister who left to join Bersatu in 2018, revealed this in a Facebook post about a recent luncheon in Bangsar with Khir and several media as well as political figures.

“He has pledged to contribute his ideas and expertise in planning the party’s election strategy,” said the Melaka Bersatu chief.

It is not known when Khir joined Bersatu, why he made the switch and whether he has relinquished his membership.

FMT has reached out to Khir for comment.

Khir, a former three-term Sungai Panjang assemblyman, was jailed for a year over power abuse in 2015 and was released on parole after serving six months.

He had attempted to make a political comeback in the 15th general election in 2022 by declaring his intention to contest the Sungai Besar parliamentary seat.

However, Barisan Nasional decided to nominate Sungai Besar chief Jamal Yunos as the candidate. Jamal later lost to the Perikatan Nasional candidate.
