Khaled: Malaysia cannot function without Umno

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia cannot function without , as the party remains central to political stability and governance, vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said today.

Winding up the debate at the 2025 General Assembly, Khaled said no government could be formed or sustained without Umno as part of it, stressing that the party continued to be a critical force in managing the country.

“Put simply, Malaysia cannot function without Umno as its breath and instinct,” he said, calling on Malays to continue placing their trust in the party so it could regain strength and play an effective role in national politics.

Khaled said Umno’s relevance lay in its long history of representing Malay interests through pragmatic and moderate politics, warning against emotional and divisive narratives that, he said, had increasingly dominated political discourse.

He added that Umno must remain independent and not become a political proxy for any party, stressing that continued support was necessary for the party to stand on its own and emerge once again as a dominant force or, at the very least, a strategic political player.

Supporting Khaled’s remarks, fellow vice-president Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said Umno’s presence in government was not merely about power, but about responsibility in safeguarding the interests of Malays, and the constitutional framework.

“Umno’s continued relevance depended on unity within the party and its ability to reconnect with the grassroots. The party is a pillar of stability that remained necessary for the country’s future,” he said in the same event.

He added that efforts to position Umno as a “Rumah Bangsa” were aimed at rebuilding trust and strengthening solidarity across all levels of the party, while ensuring it remained inclusive and adaptable to current political realities.

Wan Rosdy also said Umno is preparing for future elections with leadership training and grassroots mobilisation.
