KOTA BARU: Police have recorded an increase in extortion cases involving obscene video recordings in in recent months.

State police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said investigations revealed that several incidents went unreported as some victims were too embarrassed to come forward.

“There have been many cases of blackmail involving obscene videos between victims and suspects.

“However, not all victims are willing to lodge a police report as they feel embarrassed,” he said.

He said the modus operandi in such cases is similar, with suspects recording sexually explicit acts or conversations between themselves and the victims.

“The perpetrators would then use the recordings to extort the victims.

“Those who are brave will report the matter to the police, but those who are embarrassed tend to remain silent and may end up giving in to the suspect’s demands,” he said.

Mohd Yusoff said some of the obscene recordings began as live video sessions or casual exchanges, but later turned into blackmail cases.

He said all such cases are being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion.

Mohd Yusoff also urged anyone who has fallen victim to such acts to lodge a police report immediately.
