KOTA BARU: A police officer and several personnel from the Bachok police station are under investigation for reportedly asking the family of a drug suspect to pay RM6,000 on Dec 30.

police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said an internal investigation was immediately launched on the day of the incident and currently involves all those implicated.

“The internal probe began on the day of the incident, following allegations that the officer and personnel involved asked for money and threatened the suspect’s mother to hand over the payment,” he said.

Mohd Yusoff added that investigations are ongoing and any action against the officers alleged to be involved will be taken.

He emphasised that the police would not compromise on misconduct and would take firm action should the allegations be proven.

According to a source, the woman said that her son had been detained by a group of policemen in Bachok on suspicion of drug possession.

She claimed that the officers allegedly demanded RM6,000 from her and threatened that her son would be jailed and charged the following day if the payment was not made before midnight.

The woman, who is from Terengganu, then sought help from a friend before lodging a complaint with the authorities.
