KOTA BARU: Police believe they have dismantled a smash-and- gang with the arrest of five suspects in several raids recently.

The gang targeted parked cars and is also suspected of other thefts,  police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said.

A car owner reported that the vehicle’s window was smashed and items stolen from inside at 7.30am on Friday (Jan 30) by the side of a road near the Kampung Wakaf Berangan Cemetery in Pasir Puteh, causing estimated losses of RM1,100.

Comm Yusoff said that a police team from the contingent headquarters Criminal Investigation Department then conducted raids at three separate locations at 12.30am on Saturday (Jan 31).

Arrests were made at the inspection lane of the Rantau Panjang ICQS Complex, a house in Kampung Seligi, and another house in Kampung Gaal, Pasir Puteh.

“As a result of the raid, police arrested three men, a local woman and a Thai woman, aged between 32 and 55,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Feb 1) night.

Police also seized various items believed to be the proceeds of criminal activity, including 18 mobile phones, 11 wallets, 41 handbags and backpacks of various brands, seven pieces of jewellery, two watches, and two cars.

Comm Yusoff said the suspects have been remanded for four days.

“The arrests resolved eight smash-and- cases involving cars in and Terengganu, with an estimated total loss of RM32,200,” he said, adding that the cases are being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft. – Bernama
