Kedah sees threefold rise in school bullying cases

ALOR STAR: Bullying cases involving school students in Kedah have risen to 30 cases this year, compared to just 10 cases recorded last year.

Kedah Police Chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah said the number of cases represents a 200 per cent increase from the beginning of the year up until August.

He said a special meeting had already been held with the State Education Department, but so far, there are no proposals to form a special squad to address the issue.

“There is no need to set up a special squad, as the matter will be handled by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

“We are considering suitable times to conduct visits, particularly at night during weekends or non-school days.

“Everyone knows how it is, especially those who have stayed in hostels. I myself was once in a hostel… if there’s no school the next day, students tend to be more active at night, so we plan to visit during those times,” he said at a press conference during the Kedah Police Contingent Briefing Programme held at the Al-Bukhary International University Convocation Hall today.

However, Adzli clarified that these hostel visits would not involve all schools, but would instead focus on selected schools identified to have bullying issues.

“I may personally go down to the ground and have already instructed officers — including district police chiefs (OCPD) — to regularly visit schools associated with bullying cases,” he said.

He added that police will continue to work closely with the state education department and schools identified to have bullying problems.
