ALOR SETAR, Nov 8 (Bernama) — Kampung Terong Asam and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Langgar, near here, have been selected as the Department of Chemistry Malaysia’s (KIMIA Malaysia) Kampung Angkat MADANI (adopted village) and Sekolah Angkat MADANI (adopted school).

The village and school handover ceremony was officiated by Simon Ooi Tze Min, Political Secretary to the Science, Technology and Innovation Minister and witnessed by KIMIA Malaysia director-general Marhayani Md Saad.

Ooi expressed the ministry’s appreciation for KIMIA Malaysia’s strong commitment and dedication in making the programme successful, in line with efforts to bridge the development gap between urban and rural communities via a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach.

“For Kampung Angkat MADANI, an allocation of RM1 million was channelled for the development of infrastructure and basic facilities, while RM100,000 was provided for Sekolah Angkat MADANI to upgrade learning facilities.

“It involves the repair of a surau, a mosque and village roads; the construction of an open-concept hall; the installation of cemetery fencing and solar street lights; community programmes; as well as the upgrading of school infrastructure,” he said at the handover ceremony of Kampung Angkat and Sekolah Angkat MADANI, as well as the Kimia Ke Desa Programme 2025, here today.

Ooi said the Kimia Ke Desa Programme served as a key platform to bring science, particularly chemistry, closer to the community, demonstrating that it is accessible and not difficult to understand.

“It also provides local residents with exposure to chemical safety and environmental conservation, while offering young people opportunities to cultivate an interest in the field, particularly chemistry,” he said.

Meanwhile, Marhayani said the projects began as early as last January with community representatives and staff from the Kedah branch of KIMIA Malaysia, and the coordinated efforts of all parties have enabled the initiatives to proceed smoothly.

“For us at KIMIA Malaysia, this is not just a project but a social responsibility close to our hearts, providing an opportunity to engage with the community, understand their needs, and apply our expertise for their benefit.

“Through the Kimia ke Desa Programme, we aim to bring science, particularly chemistry, closer to school students and their parents. Sometimes, students have a keen interest in science, but without parental encouragement, that interest is difficult to develop.

“With the various programmes and activities we are conducting today, I am confident it will foster a deeper interest in science and chemistry among them,” she said.

She expressed hope that the initiatives carried out by KIMIA Malaysia would yield long-term benefits for both the community and school, contributing to the overall development of students.
