'Kak M' bullied Zara, court hears

KOTA KINABALU: A student, referred to as “Kak M”, was accused by netizens as being the person who had allegedly bullied Zara Qairina Mahathir which led to the 13-year-old’s death on July 17, the Coroner’s Court heard today.

The name surfaced in an audio recording between Zara Qairina and her mother. In the recording Zara Qairina mentioned Kak M and several other names.

In the inquest today, SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha chief warden Azhari Abd Sagap, said Kak M only made “threatening remarks” against Zara Qairina and another student when she was in a bad mood.

Azhari told the Coroner’s Court that Kak M had threatened: “Kalau aku touch-touch kau ini, berdarah kau ni” (“If I touch you, you’ll bleed”) after learning that her younger sister had been teased by Zara and another student.

“Kak M was in an unstable emotional state as her room was dirty and messy. That’s why she said those things. It was just that,” Azhari said before coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan.

The 31-year-old witness said Kak M made those remarks while passing her sister’s room, where the sister was with meeting Zara and the other student.

Azhari explained that Zara and the student had teased Kak M’s Form Two sister in writing, leaving a note that read: ‘Dia seorang yang sok orku, sengaja takutkan Form 1, padahal baru juga junior’ (“She acts like a so-called strong person, deliberately scaring the Form 1 students, even though she’s just a junior”).

The warden also said the nickname of Kak M’s sister was also mentioned in the paper which he handed over to the police.

Lawyer Joan Goh, who is representing one of the child offenders who was charged in Zara’s case, also questioned Azhari about the meaning of “Sok Sok” and “Orku”.

Azhari said “sok sok” means “pretending to be something else” while “orku” is an acronym for “orang kuat” (“strong person”).
