'Justice for Zara' rally in Melaka draws crowd of 10,000

MELAKA: More than 10,000 people gathered along Jalan Hang Tuah last night to demand justice for Zara Qairina Mahathir, whose death has sparked global outcry.

Kosmo! reported that crowds began assembling from 8pm, starting with tahlil prayers before continuing with speeches by NGO representatives, social activists and lawyers.

Participants carried banners and posters while chanting ‘Justice For Zara’ and voicing opposition to bullying and child violence.

Some were seen in tears during prayers for the late 13-year-old at the close of the event around 11pm.

Melaka Perkasa chief Mansor Bai said the gathering sent a strong message from the people to leaders to ensure justice is done without protecting anyone.

“We and the people stand with Zara’s mother in her pain, we want justice for Zara’s death,” he said.

Lawyer Sheikh Ikhzan Sheikh Salleh, who read out the gathering’s resolution, said that the people’s voice must be taken seriously without interference from irrelevant quarters.

He also asked authorities to expedite arrests and prosecutions of those directly or indirectly involved.

Zara, who was found unconscious after allegedly falling from her school dormitory building at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan in Sabah, was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital (HQE I) at 11am on July 17.

The incident went viral on social media after allegations surfaced involving bullying by the child of a minister, VIPs, and other influential figures, sparking widespread reactions from netizens.

However, police said there is no evidence so far to support these claims.

On Aug 1, Zara’s family requested an inquest to be held to determine whether any criminal elements were involved in her death.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers (A-GC) later ordered an inquest into the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir on Aug 13.

The order came after the A-GC had directed authorities to exhume her body on Aug 8.
