ISKANDAR PUTERI, Sept 11 — A total of 62 heads of households in Segamat affected by the mild earthquakes are eligible to receive up to RM3,000 each.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the assistance aims to ease the burden on families following a series of tremors from August 24 to September 3.

“The state government, with the support of the federal government through the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), has agreed to channel the monetary assistance to the 62 head of households who have also filed police reports.

“Despite being mild tremors, I understand the residents’ concerns when the ground we are standing on suddenly moves,” he said at the Johor state legislative assembly in Kota Iskandar today.

Onn Hafiz, who is also the Machap assemblyman, said that according to the Segamat District Disaster Management Department (JPBD), a total of 62 houses, two suraus, and nine government premises sustained minor damage.

However, he noted that assessments confirmed all affected buildings were structurally safe.

He added that key facilities, including those of Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad, Petronas, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, SAJ Ranhill, and the Johor Water Regulatory Authority, had been inspected and were all found to be in proper working order.

Johor Agriculture, Agro-Based Industry and Foreign Development Committee chairman Datuk Zahari Sarip said the aid will be distributed to recipients tomorrow.

Zahari, who is also the Buloh Kasap assemblyman, said the state government hopes community heads briefed on disaster measures will relay information to their residents.

“Such an incident has never happened before and residents are naturally alarmed by the situation. I urged those affected to stay calm and follow the instructions from the authorities,” he said.
