PETALING JAYA:

KPJ Healthcare Bhd’s Johor Specialist Hospital (JSH) has made history in Malaysia by becoming the first healthcare facility to use the latest robotic visualisation system in performing neurosurgery on a patient.

The hospital’s consultant neurosurgeon, Dr Sharon Casilda Theophilus, and her team had made use of the Zeiss Kinevo 900S system to remove a tumour on the left side of a patient’s skull.

The surgery combined the Zeiss system with a surgical navigation platform to boost accuracy in visualisation and instrument guidance during the operation, JSH said.

The system, which will be employed in neurosurgery, spinal surgery and combined endoscopic microsurgery, gives a boost to the hospital subspecialty services, giving patients greater access to advanced options of treatment.

“The technology gives surgeons and their teams a shared three-dimensional 4K image in real time, supporting teamwork and training.

“It is used in delicate brain procedures, including aneurysm repair, pituitary tumours and skull base surgery.

“It also enables targeting for biopsies and deep brain stimulation, assists with spinal screw placement and deformity correction, as well as supports reconstructions in ear, nose, throat and sinus surgery.

“Its robotic-assisted functions help reduce workflow interruptions and minimise manual adjustments, enabling surgeons to stay focussed during long and delicate operations,” KPJ Healthcare said in a press release.

Sharon said the system strengthened JSH’s care in complex brain and spine surgeries, providing clear views and steady control in delicate operations.

“It is a valuable platform for guiding and training the next generation of neurosurgeons,” she added.

KPJ Healthcare president and managing director Chin Keat Chyuan said the new system advances JSH’s surgical capabilities while helping the hospital build the next generation of medical specialists.

“Every step we take is guided by our commitment to care for life,” Chin said.
