PETALING JAYA:

Tebrau MP Jimmy Puah has become the latest victim of a series of threatening emails with doctored sex tapes sent to elected representatives.

Puah, a Johor vice-chief, said he will lodge reports with the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission tomorrow.

He urged the government to expedite enacting laws to curb the misuse of artificial intelligence technology.

“I received an email at 5.30pm today containing a fake pornographic video with my face edited on it. I believe it was made using the AI ‘deepfake’ technology.

“Several MPs have also become victims of this targeted cyber attack, which has greatly damaged our reputation,” he said in a statement this evening.

Yesterday, communications minister Fadzil, who also received a similar threatening email, said the government took the incidents seriously and will not tolerate the misuse of technology and communication networks to threaten or deceive the public.

The emails are believed to have been sent by the same email address, he said.

Others who have received the threats include ‘s Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli, DAP’s Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin, Bersatu’s Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan and Gerakan’s Kulim assemblyman Wong Chia Zhen.
