JOHOR BAHRU, Sept 30 — The Johor government has hired five security guards to protect a temporary residence for female students in Cairo, Egypt, following a break-in early yesterday morning.

It was reported that the temporary residence in Nasr City, Cairo, was broken into between 4am and 5am while the occupants were asleep. The students reported that their money was missing, but thankfully, no one was injured.

Johor Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid confirmed the state government had taken immediate steps to ensure the students’ safety and well-being.

He explained that the building was a temporary residence for newly-arrived students, as the state government’s permanent domicile is currently undergoing renovations.

“During the break-in, the students also lost money, but thankfully there were no injuries,” he told reporters during the Johor Islamic Religious Council (MAINJ) 100th-anniversary celebrations here today.

Mohd Fared said officials immediately consulted with the building’s Egyptian owner, who arranged for five local security guards and repaired the damaged windows.

“Despite it not being an official state government building, the security guards are a commitment to ease the concerns of both the students and their parents,” he added.

He said the renovations on the state’s permanent building are expected to be completed by the end of the year, at which point the students will be moved.

He confirmed the permanent building will also have security guards.
