Police have denied claims by an NGO that a Malaysian man was being detained in Thailand and Cambodia as a victim of a job scam, saying the person has not left the country since 2019.
Barat Daya police chief Sazalee Adam said the man’s last recorded trip abroad was to China in October 2019, and that he returned to Malaysia eight days later.
“Police found that the alleged victim has not left the country since Oct 21, 2019,” he said in a statement.
Sazalee said the Malaysia International Humanitarian Organisation had earlier issued a media statement claiming that a job scam victim was being detained in Thailand and Cambodia.
“Following that, a police report was lodged by the complainant, who is the mother of the alleged victim, at the Queens Bay police station,” he said.
He said the case is being investigated for wrongful confinement and extortion.
Sazalee added that investigations are in progress. He urged NGOs not to speculate or hold press conferences without first consulting the police or relevant authorities.
