Jin Hong aims to walk tall at SEA Games

KUALA LUMPUR: Khor Jin Hong could be Malaysia’s next walking star at the SEA Games.

The 20-year-old from Kuala Lumpur won the men’s 20,000m walk after clocking one hour 36 minutes and 56 seconds at the Malaysian Open at the Tuanku Syed Putra Stadium in Kangar today.

The time was even better than the SEA Games gold medal-winning time of 1’40:42 done by Indonesian Hendro Yap in Phnom Penh in 2023.

Jin Hong, who won last year’s Sarawak Sukma gold in the event, however, was not satisfied with his time as it was far off his personal best of one hour and 31 minutes clocked at the Asian Race Walking Championships in Nomi City, Japan in March.

Jin Hong, who will study applied geology at Universitu Malaya from October, said: “There was no one to push me in the race today.

“I will be going to the SEA Games and I want to finish on the podium. I expect to face strong challenges from other Southeast Asia walkers like Hendro Yap, and I need to clock better times than my personal best,” said Jin Hong, who is trained by national walker Lo Choon Sieng.

Meanwhile, Andre Anura Anuar leaped 7.78m to win the men’s long jump gold and also qualified for the SEA Games. His effort was better than the silver medal mark of 7.66m done by Vietnam’s Nguyen Tien Trong in 2023. Abdul Latif Romly, who is also a para athlete (7.59m) and Tang Zhi Hang (7.46m) bagged silver and bronze respectively.

Anas Ariffin won the men’s 1,500m gold (3:57.68) while Shawn Roshan Singh was second (3:57.85). Their times were faster than the SEA Games winning mark of 3:58.51 set by Thai Kieran Tuntivate in 2023.
