JOHOR BARU: A religious school teacher has lost more than RM75,000 after being duped in a scam where suspects posed as police officers.
Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the 30-year-old female victim received a phone call at about 3pm on Aug 20 from a suspect claiming to be from the Putrajaya Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission office.
In a statement on Monday (Sept 8), he said the victim was told there was a complaint made against her phone number over an investment scam.
ACP Raub said the woman was then contacted by another suspect who said the matter could be “settled internally”.
“She then made four fund transfers totalling RM77,708 between Aug 23 and 26.
“However, checks revealed that the four accounts involved did not have any records under the Commercial Crime Investigation System,” he added.
He said the victim only realised she had been scammed after telling her mother, She then lodged a police report.
“Investigations are ongoing, including checks to identify the owners of the phone numbers used by the suspects,” he said.
ACP Raub reminded the public to be wary of callers posing as police or bank officers.
“Police and banks will never instruct anyone to transfer money into personal accounts.
“Any doubts can be referred to the police or verified through the Semak Mule portal to check bank accounts or phone numbers used by scammers,” he added.
