PUTRAJAYA: Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has downplayed questions over whether his tenure as senator will be extended, saying his focus remains on carrying out his duties at the ministry.
Saifuddin said he had not given any thought to the matter despite his senate term approaching its end.
“With the workload I have, I don’t even remember when my senatorship ends. I haven’t thought about what happens after that,” he told reporters after attending the Simposium Kecerdasan Buatan: Transformasi Keselamatan 2025 today.
He added that there had been no discussions within the government or the party regarding an extension of his term, noting that such matters are best left to the leadership’s discretion.
Meanwhile, on talks of former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin being among the names tipped for a ministerial post, Saifuddin said he had no information on the matter.
“The last time Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim sought my opinion regarding Cabinet appointments was in November 2022, when the government was first formed. Now that he has served as Prime Minister for three years, I believe he is in the best position to decide on the team when the time comes. For that, I leave it to the wisdom of the Prime Minister,” he said.
Previously, a possible cabinet reshuffle was hinted to occur within the next two to three weeks by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir. Speaking after the closing ceremony of the Putrajaya Festival of Ideas (FOI), Zambry expressed hope that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim would continue supporting the programme, even if he no longer heads the ministry.
Anwar, however, remained tight-lipped on the matter when asked at several events.
