Inquest into Syamsul Haris' death depends on full police report, says A-G

KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney-General’s Chambers (A-GC) will decide whether an inquest is necessary into the death of a Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) cadet only after receiving the full police investigation report.

Attorney-General (A-G) Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said the A-GC had yet to receive the complete report from the police, who are still awaiting the second post-mortem report from the hospital.

“The police have requested that the report, including the post-mortem, be expedited. The A-GC will then determine whether an inquest will be held once the full investigation report, including the post-mortem findings and other related documents, is received,” he said yesterday.

A second autopsy on the remains of National Reserve Officers Training Unit (Palapes) cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin was conducted at Kuala Lumpur Hospital on Aug 30, following a court order.

The report on the 22-year-old cadet’s autopsy is expected to be completed within three months.

Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, 45, Syamsul Haris’ mother, filed an application on Aug 19 to exhume her son’s grave for a second autopsy and to initiate inquest proceedings to investigate the cause of his death.

Syamsul Haris reportedly died on July 28 while undergoing training at the Kota Tinggi Hospital in Johor.

The initial autopsy report found several suspicious injuries on his body, prompting the family to demand an inquest to determine the true cause of death.
