JAKARTA, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) — The Indonesian government was considering introducing an electricity tariff discount as a stimulus to spur consumption, Secretary of the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Susiwijono Moegiarso said on Thursday.
According to Susiwijono, the policy was still under review. He noted that such a measure could be key to boosting consumption, maintaining purchasing power, and supporting economic growth.
He emphasized that the stimulus aimed to maintain the balance between supply and demand. However, he cautioned that it could not be decided hastily, as it would require the use of state funds.
“Many aspects still need to be addressed, because electricity already receives subsidies and energy compensation. So, a more in-depth study is definitely needed. Since there are compensation subsidies involved, it still needs to be carefully reviewed,” he said.
The government had previously provided an electricity tariff discount as an economic stimulus from January to February this year.
