KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 — The Indian High Commission in Malaysia announced that the registration of Indian-origin Malaysian nationals as Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) has been extended to include up to the sixth generation of descendants of ‘Persons of Indian Origin’.
The High Commission in a statement said the revised procedures have been adopted following the 22nd Asean-India Summit attended virtually by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the meeting held between Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar and Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan on the sidelines of the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits early this week.
To further strengthen the people-to-people ties between India and Malaysia, and also to promote the ongoing academic and cultural engagements between the two countries, the High Commission also announced that the corpus of the Indian Scholarship and Trust Fund (ISTF) to be augmented by an additional RM 3 million.
The ISTF provides annual one-time financial support to students from financially weaker families of the Malaysian Indian community.
The High Commission added that distinguished Indian academic and anthropologist Prof A. Chellaperumal has joined Universiti Malaysia as the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Thiruvalluvar Chair of Indian Studies earlier this month.
The establishment of the Thiruvalluvar Chair of Indian Studies at Universiti Malaya was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to India in 2024. — Bernama
