In Sarawak, 221 arrested, over RM120,000 worth of drugs seized in Sibu police operation

SIBU, Nov 7 — A total of 221 individuals were arrested and drugs worth more than RM120,000 seized during a month-long anti-drug operation codenamed ‘Op Tapis Narkotik’, carried out by Sibu police between October 6 and November 6.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkpili Suhaili said the operation, led by the Sibu District Police Headquarters (IPD Sibu), resulted in 256 cases being opened under various provisions of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the Poisons Act 1952.

“Of the total arrests, 206 were men and 15 were women, including three foreign nationals,” he said in a statement today.

He added that police also confiscated 3,163.55 grams of methamphetamine (syabu) valued at RM120,214.90.

During the period, 246 cases were brought to court, one under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking, seven under Section 39A(1) for possession, 25 under Section 12(3), one under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952, and 212 under Section 15(1)(a) for drug abuse.

Ten individuals remain under remand to assist in investigations.

Zulkpili said five suspects were also charged under Section 39C(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment and one stroke of the cane.

“This operation reflects our firm commitment to combating drug distribution and abuse in Sibu. We will continue to strengthen our enforcement and intelligence-sharing efforts to curb this menace,” he said.

He urged the public to cooperate by sharing any information related to drug activities with the police through the JSJN Bukit Aman hotline at 012-2087222 or JSJN Sarawak at 017-5929211.

“Community involvement is vital in breaking the chain of drug trafficking and addiction. Together, we can make Sibu a safer place,” he added. — The Borneo Post
