In Kota Tinggi, couple and Indonesian accomplice face death penalty for trafficking 80kg of methamphetamine

KOTA TINGGI, Sept 12 — A married couple and their Indonesian friend were charged at the Sessions Court here today with drug trafficking.

The accused, Muhammad Fairul Jaffar, 43, his wife Elika Safitri, 33, and Indonesian Nursahkila Yusof, 39, nodded in acknowledgment after the charges were read out before Judge Haydar Faridzal Abu Hasan.

However, their admission could not be recorded, as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

According to the charge sheet, the trio was found trafficking 80.33 kilograms of methamphetamine at a residence in Taman Sri Penawar at 10.30pm on September 2. 

They face charges under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952, which is punishable by death or life imprisonment under Section 39B(2) of the same Act read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

In the same court, Muhammad Fairul, who is a workshop operator, claimed trial to the charge of introducing methamphetamine and amphetamine into his body about two years ago.

The alleged offence was committed at the Kota Tinggi district police headquarters’ Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID) office at 8.50pm on September 18, 2023.

The accused was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (Act 234), which carries a penalty of a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to two years. Additionally, under Section 38B of the DDA 1952, the accused may be placed under supervision for a period of not less than two and no more than three years.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Afiqah Musa, while Muhammad Fairul and Elika Safitri were represented by their counsel Nor Shahid Abd Malik.

The court set October 13 for mention and submission of chemical reports. No bail was offered to the three accused.

On September 8, a Johor state police-led operation crippled an illicit drug trafficking syndicate that had turned a gated residential house in Bandar Penawar here into a storage warehouse.

The operation that started at 10.30pm on September 2, ended at 4am on the next day, where investigators seized RM2.57 million worth of illicit drugs and assets.
