PETALING JAYA:

Controversial singer Wee Meng Chee, better known as Namewee, said he did everything he could to save the life of Taiwanese social media influencer Hsieh Yu-hsin, who died at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur last month.

In a Facebook post, Wee said he was still saddened and shocked by Hsieh’s death, adding that he felt helpless “after seeing someone pass away before my eyes”.

“I did everything to save her but it was all in vain. The image of her last moments will remain in my mind forever.”

Hsieh, who was known by her fans as the “nurse goddess” for her looks and background in nursing, reportedly met with Wee at a hotel in the capital to discuss filming a video together.

Wee was reported to have found her dead in the bathtub. He is believed to be the last person to have seen her.

Wee and Hsieh were more than just close friends, Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said. He said they had a special relationship. The Hsieh case was classified as one of murder, but the attorney-general, Dusuki Mokhtar, was quoted as saying there were currently no leads connecting Wee to Hsieh’s death.

He was arrested on Oct 22 and has since been charged with drug possession and consumption. He was released on police bail until Nov 26, pending an autopsy report.

Wee urged the public to stop passing judgment or engage in cyber-bullying over Hsieh’s career as an influencer. He said shooting certain types of videos did not mean she was a disreputable person.

On his detention, Wee, who had previous run-ins with the law, said it was the longest he had been remanded.

He said during the nine days of detention, he was questioned by six different police departments, for eight to 15 hours each day.

“They were highly meticulous and professional in their investigations,” he said.
