'I am furious,' says brother of man accused of killing their mum


ALOR SETAR: The brother of a man accused of stabbing their mother to death on Monday has called for justice, saying he is furious.

Muhammad Khairul Hakimi Shamsul Zahari, 23, said he is still struggling to understand the motive behind the attack, which claimed the life of his mother, Zahrullail Basir, 52, at their home in Taman Sultan Badlishah, Jalan Tanjung Bendahara.

“I am very angry. I do not know what the motive was.

“We will leave it to the law to ensure justice is served and that a commensurate punishment is meted out,” he said when met at his home today.

The final-year mechanical engineering student said he was at university, sitting for his seventh-semester examination,s when he was informed of the tragedy.

“I was supposed to return home tomorrow for the semester break. Following what happened, I came back yesterday.

“I will return to university this Saturday to complete my remaining examinations,” he said.

Khairul said the family is currently discussing the care of his three younger siblings, aged eight, 13, and 18, who previously lived with their mother.

He last saw his mother in October last year due to his busy schedule.

“Whenever I came home, she would always cook various dishes because she was a good cook. “I will not be able to taste her cooking again. Aidilfitri will feel different without her, but I will be okay as I have many other family members around,” he said.

Zahrullail, a bank operations executive, was found dead with three stab wounds on Monday.

Police have since arrested the victim’s 29-year-old son. He was apprehended at 8.34pm on Tuesday while on a tour bus heading to .

The suspect has been remanded for seven days until Feb 9 to assist in investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, and a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.
