KUALA LUMPUR: Hulu Langat member of parliament Mohd Sany Hamzan has sought to refer Pendang MP Datuk Awang Hashim to the Parliament’s Rights and Privileges Committee over remarks made on Thursday.
During Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail’s winding-up speech last week, Sany said Awang had deliberately mentioned the term “Hulu Laknat” several times.
“The term is understood to carry a derogatory meaning and clearly refers to Hulu Langat, a district in Selangor officially decreed by the Sultan of Selangor for use in state administration and legal matters.
“The actions of the Pendang MP not only tarnish the reputation of Hulu Langat and its residents but are also considered disrespectful to the authority and governance of the Sultan of Selangor.
“It is unbecoming and contrary to the principles of the Constitution, as well as the code of conduct expected of an MP in the Dewan Rakyat,” he told a press conference.
Sany said an official motion had been submitted to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul this morning to allow the matter to be investigated immediately and for appropriate action to be taken.
“In the motion, I propose that the Pendang MP be referred to the Parliamentary Rights and Privileges Committee for further investigation, in accordance with Rule 36(10)(a) of the (Dewan Rakyat) Standing Orders.
“This is because his speech clearly carries a derogatory meaning and is inappropriate for an MP to utter,” he said.
At the same press conference, Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong claimed Awang had recently referred to Kota Melaka as “Kota Celaka” in the Dewan Rakyat.
“We strongly condemn the actions of the Pendang MP.
“When I return to my constituency and speak with residents and voters in my area, they express their dissatisfaction and anger over what the MP has done.
“We hope the Speaker will accept the motion submitted by the Hulu Langat MP,” he said.
Present at the press conference were Syahredzan Johan (PH–Bangi), Aminolhuda Hassan (PH–Sri Gading), Azli Yusof (PH–Shah Alam) and Suhaizan Kaiat (PH–Pulai).
