KUALA LUMPUR: Apart from the presence of world leaders such as United States President Donald Trump, the 47th Asean Summit taking place today is set to mark a historic milestone for the regional bloc and Malaysia as Asean Chair.
Prime Minister’s senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said among the key highlights of today’s summit is the accession of Timor Leste as Asean’s 11th member.
He said during the opening ceremony of the summit, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will deliver his keynote address outlining Malaysia’s aspirations to shape a more inclusive and sustainable Asean unity, in line with this year’s theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.”
“This morning’s opening session will also mark a historic moment as Asean leaders sign the Declaration on the Admission of Timor Leste to Asean, officially recognising it as the 11th member state.
“This represents a major achievement under Malaysia’s chairmanship of Asean this year, completing Asean as a united regional family.
“Timor-Leste’s inclusion will also bring new dynamics to the three pillars of Asean — Political-Security, Economic, and Socio-Cultural — contributing to the long-term vision of a truly inclusive Southeast Asia,” Tunku Nashrul said during the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) daily briefing this morning.
Another key highlight, he said, is the signing ceremony of the Thailand–Cambodia peace agreement, which will be witnessed by Anwar and President Trump.
Tunku Nashrul said the signing of the peace agreement symbolises the success of Asean’s peace diplomacy in resolving disputes in an amicable and constructive manner, further strengthening confidence in Malaysia’s role as a facilitator of regional peace.
“Today marks a historic milestone for both Asean and Malaysia.
“Alongside Timor Leste’s admission, the presence of global leaders and the success of regional peace diplomacy underscore Asean’s strength as a mature, united, and globally respected bloc.
“Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, Malaysia remains steadfast in championing principled and people-centred regional leadership, continuing to serve as a pillar of stability and a leading force in shaping a peaceful, prosperous, and resilient Southeast Asia,” he said.
